Now it’s Congress’s turn.
Tell Congress to support effective, smart aid programs that prevent disasters before they occur.

In the last few weeks, thanks to the incredible support from Oxfam members, we have the largest public health program in Somalia, as well as a therapeutic feeding center that is treating thousands of children on the brink of starvation.
However, the drought has led to more than 12 million people in need of assistance in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, and 500,000 people are on the brink of starvation.
The need is immense, and the price tag to provide life-saving food, water, and medicine is over 2 billion dollars – and aid organizations can’t do it alone.
The U.S. has shown strong leadership in responding early and generously with emergency relief and assistance – but it must continue in the coming months if we want to prevent more lives from being lost.
We need to do more before disasters strike to build up the ability of people to endure drought and other weather shocks. But right now, Congress is debating whether to fund programs that would help communities – and many are on the chopping block.
Call on Congress to invest in critical programs that will make communities stronger and more resilient in the face of disasters.
Yesterday, Secretary Clinton rightfully called for the U.S. to do just that: invest in the productivity and resilience of small holder farmers to prevent future humanitarian disasters that cost both lives and financial security. Clinton highlighted promising programs such as Feed the Future, which would help communities prepare for these shocks.
Unfortunately, these programs face serious threats of being cut completely. Members of Congress see the same images from East Africa and read the same stories we do, but they need to hear that their constituents really care before they’ll take action.
Ask Congress to fully fund effective, smart aid programs that aim to make sure communities are resilient in the face of crises.
