NY-NJ Container Imports Fall 0.5 Percent

June decline in import traffic marks first decrease in 20 months.
Import container volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey slipped 0.5 percent in June from the same month a year ago, the port's first monthly decline in 20 months.
The port handled 221,461 20-foot equivalent units in June, down 1,210 TEUs from the same period a year ago. Import container traffic in June also fell 3.7 percent sequentially from May.
Overall volume at the port was up 1 percent in June from last year thanks to a 3.8 percent gain export volume. But export volume also fell 11.3 percent from May and the 131,265 TEUs marked the slowest month for exports at the port since February.
Overall volume at the port in the first six months of 2011 was up 8.2 percent over the first half of 2010. The port’s import traffic from January to June rose 7.6 percent year-over-year to 1.3 million TEUS while exports improved 9.2 percent over the same period.
