Current Cruis Ship Pier at Puerto Chiapas

Overview of the potential site for expansion of Puerto Chiapas.
With the news that Chiquita Brand could possibly be shipping from the newly expanded "Puerto Chiapas" (Formerly, Puerto Maduro) near Tapachula, Mexico, Mexican mango shippers from the early season zones will have a new route to USA markets.
Puerto Chiapas is a small port town that handles the export of agricultural products grown in the Soconusco region, an area of rich lowlands and foothills. The surrounding area has some beautiful beaches, including Playa Linda in Puerto Chiapas and San Benito.
Amid reported interest from US multi-national Chiquita the Gramosa Group has secured the concession to develop the Mexican port with an US$11m investment.

Grupo Gamosa has been in business since 1986 and will also operate ports on the Mexican Pacific coast in Topolobambo in Sinaloa and Guaymas in Sonora.
Puerto Chiapas is one of the smaller ports in Mexico's infrastructure. However, the investment in upgrades and the likelyhood that both Chiquita Brands and Mexico's Grupo Herdez operating from the port in the near future should see growth on the horizon for the sleepy southern Mexico port.
The contract to operate the port of Chiapas is for 25 years with an option for and additional 7 years.
The investmentby Grupo Gramosa of $11,000,000 dollars is calculated to expand port space by 80,000 square meters. (Actaul water front / wharf space was unavailable.)
This development should benefit mango exporters from Chiapas and Oaxaca who currently have the highest land freight components to the USA border. In addition, the ability to travel by ocean cargo will allow direct shipments clser to destination markets avoiding costly trans shipments in Texas and Arizona.
