OBSERVATIONS FROM AN EXPERIENCED MEXICAN SHIPPER ON THE 2011 MANGO SEASON AND FUTURE OF THE MANGO DEAL...

The following is a communication from an experienced Mexican shipper and IMO comments....

Monday 05 September 2011

Will;

The Mexico mango season is practically finished :

Here are some observations.

Interesting facts:

1) Mexico surpassed last year's volume even with a bad crop in Los Mochis.

IMO NOTE: Los Mochis really needs to get their act together. They are wasting a "Golden" opportunity.

2) When will mexico level out ?? 55 million..60 million ???IMO NOTE: It will continue to grow as long as their are people willing to sell fruit below break-even. (ie-drug money) Even HWT mangoes move at 5 for $1.00 at retail level.

3) Peru is the second largest supplier to US market ?? Brazil number will end up being a distant third.

IMO NOTE: Mexico & Peru are on the same axis. As long as government kicks in 5% "drawback", and there is funny money out there, Peru will flood the market as I suspect they will this year. Doctoring of commercial invoices for 5% "drawback" need to be investigated by WTO, etc.

4) Haiti ships a lot more than I thought.

IMO NOTE: Haiti is a "niche" market. They shipped about 2.5 million cartons from April through August.. roughly 2%...

5) At what number will Brazil bottom out ?

IMO NOTE: Brazil has to keep numbers at the levels expressed (100/week max) and get out before Peru kills them..it is more a timing issue for Brazil.

6) Who is going to try and grow fruit for the September to November window ??..can Mexico extend its season or can Ecuador and Peru produce any earlier ??

IMO NOTE: I think 2012 will be a game changer with irradiation facility in Mexico and Australia coming to USA...Australia will fill the September to November window in the very near future.

7) Biggest volume week of the year...end of march ?? Who would have though that ? Half of the USA still has snow..no wonder peruvians got killed this year.

IMO NOTE: Peru is scary...for reasons already expressed and out of control volume...this year Mexico was early...will Peru back off this year?...Peru needs to plant more early season varieties to spread out production...Peru got killed because they shipped 6 million cartons in February that collided with Mexican production...Peru must look at the irradiation option so that they can ship tree ripened fruit.

Food for thought !!
